Summary

The thyroid is a gland located at the base of the neck, responsible for regulating metabolism as part of the body’s endocrine system. If the thyroid produces an excessive amount of hormones (hyperthyroidism), or an insufficient amount (hypothyroidism), it can lead to a number of different disorders.

Problems with thyroid function affect approximately 1 in 50 people (rising to 1 in 20 for people aged 60 and over), with an underactive thyroid gland being the most common cause, and women being more likely to be affected. A thyroid function test measures the amount of T4 (Thyroxine) and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) to determine whether there are any problems with thyroid function. The assessment is available for any adults aged 18 and over.

The thyroid function test involves collecting a small sample of blood in a vial, and can be completed from the comfort of home. The test requires minimal preparation, with results available within a few days. The sample can be returned via post once the test is complete.
