Vitamin D plays an important role in regulating the body’s calcium and phosphate levels, which is used for keeping muscles, bones and teeth healthy and strong. It is made in our skin but can also be found in certain types of food.

The liver processes vitamin D into a chemical called 25-hydroxyvitamin D, also known as, calcifediol which enables it to be used by the body. The test measures the levels of this chemical in order to accurately assess your body’s available supply of vitamin D.

Many people living in the UK are deficient in vitamin D due to low levels of sunlight, but are not aware since it is not usually monitored.

What is a Vitamin D test?

 

The vitamin D test involves a self-administered finger prick blood test, which is collected in a vial and returned via post. The test can be taken from the comfort of home. The test requires a minimal amount of preparation, with results available in just a few days.

The test measures your body’s level of vitamin D. If the level is too high, it can lead to problems with bone and kidney problems.
